Trapper volleyball snaps losing skid

NWC hosts matches Friday and Saturday

After a poor start to Region IX play the Northwest College volleyball team desperately needed a win to wrap up its quick three game road swing. The Trappers got their win on Tuesday night over Central Wyoming 3-1 after losing to Eastern Wyoming 3-1 and getting swept by Laramie County Community College over the weekend.

EASTERN WYOMING 3, NORTHWEST 1

(25-15, 18-25, 21-25, 14-25)

Kicking off the three game road swing Friday the Trappers (16-5 overall, 1-4 Region IX North) went to battle against the Lancers (16-6 overall, 4-0 Region IX North).

Northwest came out strong, racking up 15 kills in the first set and cruising past the hosts for a 25-15 win.

A worse attack in the second set saw the Lancers even things up with a 25-18 win to tie the match 1-1.

Northwest struggled to find the court again in the third set, as Eastern took a 2-1 lead after a 25-21 win.

The night finished with a negative .147 hitting percentage for the Trappers in the fourth set, as the hosts cruised to a 25-14 win to complete the 3-1 win.

“It was our errors,” coach Scott Keister said. “All stuff we can control, and it was just more of the same story of the weekend before.”

Aidann Mottishaw led with eight kills and added 13 assists.

Sierra Kilts led with 12 digs, Kennedy Oman led with 4.5 blocks, two solo, and Brooke Larsen led with two aces.

LCCC 3, NORTHWEST 0

(23-25, 15-25, 22-25)

In Cheyenne on Saturday the Trappers matched up with the Golden Eagles (8-14 overall, 3-1 Region IX North), looking to snap a three game skid in region play.

Friday’s poor hitting carried over into Saturday, but the Trappers kept close in the first set behind the Golden Eagles but narrowly fell 25-23.

A stronger second set by the hosts sunk the Trappers early, as Northwest fell 25-15 and fell behind 2-0.

The third set was close just like the first, but another poor hitting set saw Northwest fall 25-22 and fall to 0-4 in Region IX action.

Larsen led with 10 kills as the only Trapper in double digits.

Devree Gines led with 16 assists and added 10 digs, Kilts led with 18 digs and Jordynel Anderson led with 3.5 blocks, one solo.

Four different Trappers had one ace.

“We didn’t serve great, we didn’t pass great, we didn’t hit great,” Keister said. “The block is doing a nice job, we’ve just got to learn how to dig behind them.”

NORTHWEST 3, CENTRAL WYOMING 1

(24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22)

Heading down to Riverton on Tuesday the Trappers needed a win against the Rustlers (11-8 overall, 2-3 Region IX North) to gain some momentum before returning home.

Central came out on top in the first set, narrowly earning a 26-24 win for the 1-0 lead.

Northwest responded in the second set, claiming the biggest victory of the night with a 25-19 win.

In the third set, the Trappers narrowly finished with a 25-23 win, and completed the victory with a 25-22 win in the fourth to earn their first Region IX win of the season.

“We came in on Monday, we had a practice, it kicked them into gear a little bit,” Keister said. “Just understanding that we don’t have to be perfect, we just have to better each ball. That was kind of the mentality going into Tuesday night after the weekend. We don’t have to pass perfect, we just have to better the ball, we don’t have to dig perfect, we just have to better the ball. That was nice to see that come out on Tuesday night.”

Northwest recorded double digit kills in each set, while cutting down on hitting errors to six or less in three of the four sets.

Larsen led with 14 kills, Mottishaw led with 36 assists, Kilts had 27 digs, Oman had five blocks and Burkelle Field led with two aces.

HOME WEEKEND

Northwest will return home this weekend after the week away, starting with a contest against the Rocky Mountain College JV at 6 p.m. on
Friday.

“I don’t know if it’s nice or not to have a nonconference opponent at this point in the year, but it is what it is and it’ll allow us to work on a few things and keep the momentum building,” Keister said.

The Trappers return to Region IX action on Saturday at 2 p.m. taking on Gillette College (10-6 overall, 0-4 Region IX North) to finish up the first half of the conference season.

“We play a nice Gillette team that’s playing really well, and they’re in kind of the same boat as us,” Keister said. “The nice part about our region, the parity is so even so anybody can beat anybody on any night. So our destiny is still in our hands. If we can just take care of business one match at a time, we’ll be sitting pretty good. If we don’t and we need a little help from other people, it’s highly possible. So we’re not out by any means.”
