Compete in Buffalo invitational Saturday

The Powell Panther girls’ swim team was busy last week, dualing against Worland and Cody in a triangular on Tuesday, Oct. 1, before finishing third Saturday at the Douglas Invitational in a pool that included rare competition in a meter pool.

CODY TRIANGULAR

Starting off in Cody the Panthers saw familiar faces in the Warriors and Fillies, competing in a double dual triangular.

Powell fell to Worland 108-69 and Cody 133-51, as the Panthers continued to battle despite three of their top swimmers sidelined due to injury.

“The scoring method was disadvantageous for us versus invitational meets scoring because of our depleted number of athletes available to compete,” coach Bob Smartt said. “The good news is that the team had 13 personal best performances.”

Kaitlin Diver continued to lead the way for the Panthers, taking home two individual victories in the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 27.61 seconds, and the 100 fly with a time of 1:07.31.

Powell got two other top three finishers with Samantha Young placing third in the 200 free (2:37.85) and Kumora Snell placing third in the 100 back (1:20.46).

Other top eight finishers for the Panthers included Anika Anderson taking fourth in the 200 IM (2:59.23) and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:34.25); Tempie Day placing fourth in the 500 free (7:30.59); Myah Rakness placing sixth in the diving (133.6); Claire Hultgren placing sixth in the 500 free (7:53.48); Charlotte Beeton placing sixth in the 100 back (1:25.63) and eighth in the 100 fly (1:35.56); Brooke Brown placing sixth in the 100 breast (1:40.46) and seventh in the 200 IM (3:05.25); Leah Sockey placing eighth in the 200 free (3:28.68) and Baylee Kraft placing eighth in the 100 back (1:26.06).

DOUGLAS INVITE

Heading on one of the longer road trips of the season the Panthers took  part in a five team invitational.

One of the unique aspects of the Douglas meet is the competition in a 25-meter pool as opposed to a 25-yard pool, resulting in slightly longer races as well as different qualifying standards for the state meet.

Diver once again pulled off a double victory, winning the 200 free (2:27.31) and the 100 breast (1:29.72).

Other top finishers included Brown taking second in the 200 IM (3:29.69) and third in the 100 fly (1:43.19); Young taking third in the 400 free (6:15.82) and fifth in the 100 fly (1:46.41); Hultgren placing fourth in the 200 IM (3:46.59); Beeton placing fourth in the 100 fly (1:44.97); and Day taking fifth in the 400 free (6:33.96).

“Our Panthers did relatively better in this meet because our athletes were ready to swim the more difficult events which had fewer entrants, partly because the Douglas High School pool is 25 meters which is 11% longer than the 25-yard pools that we swim in for all of our other competitions,” Smartt said.

Powell finished third as a team with 223 points, with host Douglas claiming first at 300 points, Buffalo was second with 232, Newcastle was fourth with 178 and Rawlins was fifth with 175 points.

Powell will now take the week to prepare before heading to Buffalo on Saturday to compete in an invitational.

The Panthers return home next Tuesday, Oct. 15, to take part in their final home meet of the season.
