Superintendent Jay Curtis’ contract extended another year

Posted

Jay Curtis will continue to serve in his role as Park County School District 1 superintendent through at least June 30, 2025 with a salary increase of 2% in his latest contract.

This means that Curtis’ current salary of $174,178 will now increase to $177,662.

Curtis’ contract extension was unanimously approved by the school board in January and his salary was also unanimously approved at the June 13 board meeting with trustee Trace Paul absent.

Upon approval board chair Kim Dillivan addressed Curtis in front of the board and acknowledged the work he does for the district.

“We appreciate what you do, we have some sense of what you do, not all of it,” Dillivan said. “But I think you do a fantastic amount. I’ll just mention again, like every year, your evaluation was excellent.”

The length of Curtis’ contract is approved ahead of other employees in January but his contract amount is not decided until after that of other staff. The superintendent is the only employee in the district who is not on a pay scale, Curtis said. The base salaries of other employees in the district is decided first — if they do not receive a raise to their base salary Curtis’ base salary will also remain the same.

According to the Continued Review of Educational Resources in Wyoming report, the average superintendent salary in the state for the 2021-2022 school year was $144,073.

Curtis said that he is compensated “very well” for the job he does and that it is commensurate to that of superintendents in similar districts within the state and on the national level.

Curtis said that the current school board is the best you can “put on paper,” and applauded the trustees’ understanding of their roles and conscientiousness. He added that he is blessed to work with the staff at PCSD1.

“I make no secret to the board and anyone else that asks that I feel so blessed to live and work in the community that is Powell,” Curtis said.
