CODY — Is your operation prepared for the next generation — or just the next season? On Wednesday, Feb. 25, Park County Open Lands invites local farmers and ranchers to take part in a Succession Planning Forum: Lunch with Park County Open Lands designed to help agricultural families think intentionally about the long-term future of their land and operations.
The forum will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Northwest College’s Yellowstone Building. Developed in response to conversations with producers across the county, the event centers on a shared concern: Without planning, working lands and family operations become increasingly vulnerable over time.
The event will open with time to network with succession planning professionals and work with Lucy Pauley from the Wyoming Department of Ag on a farm succession workbook. A complimentary lunch will follow, along with a welcome and introduction from Park County Open Lands Director Alex Few. Alex will share the organization’s mission and frame the broader purpose of the forum: linking succession planning to the long-term health of agriculture, families, and open lands in Park County.
The afternoon will include a local landowner panel, where farmers and ranchers share succession stories and answer audience questions. "It will be fun to share my story of buying the farm, and interesting to hear how others have handled these big transitions,” stated Powell farmer Rick Harrison who will be a speaker on the landowner panel.
Participants will also hear from Wesley Tucker, an expert in agricultural succession planning, who will provide an overview of key considerations for successful transitions. Concurrent breakout sessions will allow attendees to choose topics most relevant to their needs, including getting started with your succession plan, conservation easements, and navigating family dynamics.
A happy hour at WYOld West will follow, where participants can network with legal, accounting, and tax professionals.
The event is open to farmers and ranchers of all generations. Advance registration is requested by Feb. 16 to ensure adequate meals are provided.
