Success leads to national qualifiers

Mathcounts will send two to nationals for first time

Powell Middle School’s Mathcounts team is having quite a good year. A third consecutive state win followed a 15th straight win at the Northwest College Chapter contest, and for the first time ever two Powell students are going to nationals in Washington.

Eighth grade students Hayden Peters and Cody Bozell will be attending the national competition in May — their coach Dale Estes will be attending the competition as the coach for all of Wyoming’s national students.

“We just always have some good athletes that are dedicated and come to practice every Wednesday morning and it’s amazing,” Estes said. “I would have never dreamt of that happening 15 years ago.”

He added that it’s “pretty special” to have two Powell students, half of the state champion team, heading to nationals.

The Mathcounts team of Peters, Bozell, and fellow eighth graders Huston Dearcorn and Brady Kuenn earned first place at state in Laramie on March 8, and all students were in the top 25% of individual competitors. Peters and Bozell earned second and third individually, which earned them a spot at nationals.

The two capable competitors have been practicing for the national competition by working on their sprint round and memorizations.

“I just need to memorize more Pythagorean triples,” Peters said.

Bozell joked, “I need to memorize just about everything.”

On the road to qualifying for nationals, Powell Middle School’s Mathcounts team put out a strong performance at the chapter contest Feb. 4. The team of Kuenn, Bozell, Dearcorn and Peters took first to secure Powell’s longstanding winning streak and individually the team also performed well. Kuenn placed first, Bozell second, seventh grade Mathcounts member Colson Sherman placed third, Dearcorn placed fourth and Peters placed fifth.

“I felt pretty good because I got first individual,” Kuenn said.

In the competition’s countdown round Bozell took first, Dearcorn second, Kuenn third and Sherman fourth.

The team works well together, Peters said.

The four students will split up the problems with each member taking two or three of the 10 questions assigned to the team, Kuenn explained.

“I just want to thank our coaches, [Necole] Hanks and [Dale] Estes, for being really great and guiding us through our mathematical journey,” Peters said.

Mathcounts’ final competition of the regular season will be the Wyoming Contest, April 16 at Northwest College.
