Powell homeowners have until Monday, May 15 to apply to have an 8-12 foot tall deciduous shade tree planted in their yard as part of the Homesteader Roots program.

The program, which began four years ago, offers homeowners a tree planted in their front yard for only a $50 cost share if the resident meets all requirements.

“It has to be a front yard,” organizer Josh Pomeroy said. “We want the whole community to enjoy it, and you need to have proper space for the tree. We’re offering large, deciduous shade trees and a few ornamental trees if you have a smaller space.”

They source all of their trees from a nursery in Cody, and usually local Boy Scouts help plant the trees.

He said they’ve had enough donations this year to handle the average amount of people who usually apply (They had five applicants as of Monday and usually get six to seven total), but they’re always accepting more donations.
