Park County Search and Rescue volunteers assisted a 19-year-old male who had injured himself falling off a horse in the Thorofare last weekend, arranging to get him evacuated from the remote wilderness to a hospital by helicopter.
According to a PCSAR release, the male appeared to have suffered a broken lower leg, broken jaw and a possible skull fracture.
At approximately 3 p.m. on Sept. 14, PCSAR was dispatched to assist the male who had suffered serious injuries from an accident on horseback. The male was located in the Woody Creek area of the Thorofare and was estimated to be around 10 hours from the trailhead via horseback.
PCSAR team members in the Incident Command Center arranged for air resources to respond to the scene and coordinated with Tip Top SAR in Sublette County to fly in a ground team if the air resource was unable to land. Although local air resources were unavailable, PCSAR was able to make contact with Air Idaho Rescue.
Air Idaho Rescue was able to locate the injured male, remove him safely from the Thorofare, and transport him to Idaho Falls, Idaho, for medical treatment.
