Dear editor:
Park County is asking voters to approve a 1% sales tax that would collect over $19 million, including $1.578 million so the Town of Meeteetse can buy a new sanitation truck and make town facility upgrades.
Those of us who live outside town limits already pay private haulers for our garbage. We receive no municipal service. The town has also made it clear that rural residents are not welcome to use its dumpsters — residents have been warned and can be fined for doing so. Yet this tax would force the same rural residents to help buy a garbage truck that only serves the town.
A county-wide sales tax should not subsidize a service limited to one town, especially when that town actively restricts access for the people being asked to pay for it. If Meeteetse needs a new sanitation truck, the town should fund it itself. I’ll be voting against this tax.
Another 1% is another reason to shop in Billings.
