Having shed much of its oncology services in a cost cutting measure last fall, Powell Valley Healthcare is now hoping to continue working well with hospitals in Lovell and Cody on how best to care for cancer patients.
New Powell Valley Healthcare CEO Todd Sandford told the Tribune earlier this year he’s spoken with the CEOs at both Cody Regional Health and North Big Horn Hospital — where former Powell Dr. Carletta Collins is now practicing — to have a “collaborative working relationship.”
“Between both organizations, there’s going to be things that, of course, we compete on, but we’re stronger together for the residents of the basin than if we just do completely our own thing,” Sandford said.
Both Cody and Lovell are maintaining oncology, with Cody recently announcing plans to cover for the departure of Dr. Thomas Reid, who has been a provider at the Big Horn Basin Cancer Center for years.
Cody hospital spokesperson Ashley Trudo said the hospital plans to replace him with a full time medical oncologist.
“Our priority is, and always will be, our patients,” said Jennifer Ball, Cancer Center director. “We have a strong coverage plan in place, an experienced oncology team, and clear processes to support patients through every step of their care. Our patients will continue to receive high-quality, compassionate cancer care close to home.”
The Big Horn Basin Cancer Center will remain fully operational, offering medical oncology, radiation oncology and infusion services. Referrals will continue to be carefully reviewed, and patients will be clearly informed about who will be involved in their care. The center is also actively recruiting a permanent medical oncologist to further strengthen long-term services.
“We are committed to transparency, thoughtful planning, and making sure patients and families feel supported and informed. This plan reflects the strength of our team and our dedication to providing exceptional care right here in northwest Wyoming,” said CEO Hannah McRae.
In addition to clinical coverage planning, Cody Regional Health is continuing to invest in the future of cancer care in the region. This includes preparations for the upcoming Linear Accelerator Grand Opening later this spring, which will further expand access to advanced radiation therapy close to home.
