Powell Golf Club hosted the final leg of the 2020 Big Horn Basin Junior Tour on Thursday. Adolescents between the ages of 7 and 17 from across the northwest Wyoming area participated in the event.
The tournament was the third event in the tour, which previously held rounds at Green Hills Golf Course in Worland and Olive Glenn Country Club in Cody. In the Powell event, 17 kids participated, with boys and girls split up into four age groups: 7-8, 9-10, 11-13 and 14-17.
The event was a good opportunity for the course to host young competitors who had never played at Powell Golf Club.
“It brings in kids that aren’t from here, so it gives the course exposure to kids from Cody and around the basin,” said Kury Reynolds, director of golf at Powell Golf Club. “Five are from Powell, and we have one from Lovell, some from Worland, so a good mix.”
In a normal year, more kids would participate. But in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, fewer were able to play. Even so, playing is an escape for those 17 kids from the hectic nature the coronavirus has created.
“I think that the golf course is something that you can do alone or with social distancing,” Reynolds said. “You have plenty of space in a golf course. It’s a much smaller field than normal, but it’s still a good break for them.”
Golfers in the event started the round on the back nine. Participants aged 11 and older played nine holes, while golfers younger than 11 played just five.
