Two dominant home wins extended the winning streak to five for the Powell Panther girls’ soccer team, after defeating Mountain View 6-0 on Friday and Lyman 6-2 on Saturday to set up a thrilling finish in the final week of the regular season.

POWELL 6, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0

Hoping to carry recent success after over a week off from action, the Panthers (10-5 overall, 8-3 3A West) welcomed the Buffalos (4-8 overall, 2-8 3A West) on Friday.

Ivy Agee got the scoring started early for the Panthers, finding the back of the net just two minutes into the game to make it 1-0.

A second came in the 17th minute, when Emery Hernandez found her way behind the defense and slotted it home to make it 2-0.

Two more goals came before the half, when Coy Erickson fired home a long-range effort with seven minutes left and Hernandez quickly made it 4-0 a minute later after finding herself behind the defense once again on a long ball.

“We were thankful the ladies were able to put several goals away early as the wind is a big equalizer, and anything can happen,” coach Danny Agee said. “The ladies did well and were able to hold strong in the second half as well. It was a good game.”

Agee got her second of the game just over nine minutes into the second half, firing in a 25-yard shot to extend the advantage to 5-0.

She completed her hat trick late in the game, scoring just inside the edge of the box with nine minutes left to cap off the scoring at 6-0.

POWELL 6, LYMAN 2

The win Friday extended Panther’s streak to four games, as they looked to make it five in a row on Saturday against the Eagles (3-11 overall, 2-9 3A West).

Erickson got things started early, putting in a rebound five minutes into the game to make it 1-0.

Powell then hit the crossbar twice over the next 20 minutes.

Agee finally broke through with 12:40 left, putting in a shot to make it 2-0.

Erickson got her second of the half off a corner kick, scoring a header with 5:30 left to make it 3-0.

The strong first half attack was capped off once again by Agee, scoring off a throw-in from Emma Johnson to make it 4-0 heading into the half.

“The first half of the Lyman game was the best half we have played all year,” coach Agee said. “The creativity in the attack is what we are looking for and every player on the field stepped into this when they needed to. We reached a whole new level in that game, and I am happy with that.”

Agee quickly completed her hat-trick early in the second half, scoring six minutes in to make it 5-0.

Lyman did not go away, scoring a difficult near-post shot with 19 minutes left and a penalty with 14:40 remaining to make it 5-2.

Agee shut down any hopes of a comeback, scoring a minute later to make the final score 6-2 and secure a fifth straight victory for the Panthers.

“The entire weekend was a huge success,” coach Agee said. “It was one of our best displays of solid ball movement all year. We had high numbers around the ball which allowed us to defend quickly on turnovers and lock the other teams into their own end for most of the game. The ladies executed very well.”

POSTSEASON CHAOS

The Panthers still have it all to play for heading into the final weekend of the season.

Powell is locked in a difficult four-way battle with the other three qualifiers for the state tournament, Lander (8-4 overall, 8-2 3A West), Cody (9-2 overall, 8-2 3A West) and Green River (10-3 overall, 8-2 3A West).

Powell sits second with 25 points, having one of its three losses via shootout to gain an extra point.

Lander sits on top with 26 points, with its two losses coming via shootout, while Green River and Cody sit with 24 points each as neither have had a loss by shootout.

Games this week include Lander heading to Cody on Tuesday (today) before taking on Mountain View Thursday, Powell taking on Green River at 4 p.m. on Friday in its final home game, and then the Wolves heading to Cody on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.

“Our only focus is always to build better possession of the ball and to control play,” coach Agee said. “We will keep working on our game and we will be ready. We are more than capable of getting a win on Friday and hopefully everything else falls into place. It would be great to have as high a seed as possible.”

Powell has split the season series with both Cody and Lander, but lost in a shootout in Green River on the road.

With a win in regulation on Friday, Powell can guarantee at least the three seed, but can raise as high as the one seed if results fall properly. The Panthers will likely fall to the four seed heading into state if they lose.

Opponents in the east can vary, with the Panthers likely taking on Worland or Douglas if they are a lower seed, and Buffalo, Rawlins or Newcastle as a higher seed.
