Powell Christmas Baskets returns for season of giving

Posted

Applications are available starting Nov. 1 for Powell Christmas Baskets, the nonprofit organization that works to ensure families in need have a good Christmas meal and, for the kids, presents under the tree.

Organizers Howard and Ann Sanders, and Terry and Jan Cronin, provide the food and work with Toys for Tots to give out toys for the kids in families that receive a meal.

The organizers are getting food from Blair’s this year, including a turkey, sides such as potatoes and green beans, some fruit, bread and even a pie. Howard Sanders said a local dairy will be donating milk and Pepsi beverages.

He and his wife have helped with the program since 2007 and, when David Blevins stepped down from the organizing role about six years ago, they stepped up.

“We couldn’t let it die,” Sanders said, adding, “It’s one of those things you do it once, you can’t give it up.”

He said they served roughly 120 families last season and expects at least a similar amount this year.

“I also help out over at Loaves and Fishes, and I see how much food is going out from there,” Sanders said. “I think the need is there … I mean, it’s too bad that the need is there, but because it is, you do what you can to help with it.”

Applications will be available at a variety of locations around town, such as the Park County School District 1 administration building, various churches, the police station, Department of Family Services office, Headstart, First Stop and more.

Applications, which are printed in English on one side and Spanish on the other, need to be turned in by Dec. 10 to the Powell Police Department to be vetted.

All applicants must reside within the Powell and Clark area code 82435.

Distribution is Dec. 23 at the north entrance to the Cabre Gym at Northwest College from 10 a.m.-noon.

The organization accepts monetary donations to continue bringing Christmas joy to local families. Donations can be made to Powell Christmas Baskets and mailed to P.O. Box 124, Powell, WY 82435.
