For 25 years, the Bed and Biscuit has been offering boarding services for pets in the Cody and Powell area.
But when the Cody location had more animals then it could handle, owners Leigh Dvarishkis and Glen Gresly decided to expand. They found an old veterinary clinic in Powell four years ago, and along with their son Dane Dvarishkis and his wife Jenn Bendenski, who run the Powell operation, an extensive remodel began.
“It’s been a project, get this building back up and running,” Dane said. “There isn’t anything that hasn’t been redone.”
Among other things, they added some courtyard areas so there are three outdoor playyards, as well as one indoors. They also redid the electrical and the interior. Six months later they quietly opened for business.
From overnight boarding to doggie daycare to spa options, the Bed and Biscuit offers comprehensive care for your furry friends.
“We’re a small facility that likes to focus on a lot of quality,” Dane said. “We work hard to make sure that each animal is in the best situation that they can be. We get to know them personally. My wife is funny, she’s terrible at recognizing the customers, but she knows every dog. She’ll be like, ‘Is that so and so over there? She finds them throughout the town.”
The Powell site offers all the amenities of the Cody Camp with the exception of the heated pool.
“We were actually first designed as an overflow for Cody,” Dane said. “Cody was hitting anywhere from 80 to 100, so we opened this one up. It started to develop on its own, and now we have a good customer base here in Powell and Greybull.”
The building can handle 40 dogs at one time and averages about 30 in the busy season.
“We decided to limit all the chaos and really focus and make sure that the dogs have the best attention possible,” Dane said. “So we just run a small crew and have a max of 40 large dogs, six little dogs and six cats.”
Luxury lodging
Dogs stay in spacious suites that offer privacy and comfort, and enjoy time at the outdoor play yards. All dogs go through the Bed and Biscuit’s seven-step program to find a socialization group that’s comfortable for them.
“We really want this place to be kind of a calm, relaxing vacation for the animal while the owner’s on vacation, and we take a lot of pride in that,” Dane said. “That is our main mission, is to make sure that the animals are safe, but also have a good time.”
In addition to boarding, pet owners can add other services. There’s one that includes a nature walk, another with one-on-one cuddle time and even a barnyard adventure.
“In the farm experience the dog gets to walk out and see the horses and the pigs, and go on a hike around the property and smell the place,” he said.
They also can provide special treats chosen by pet owners including a puppucino and PB & J Pawsicle.
For your feline friends, the Bed and Biscuit has three-tiered cat condos in a room with large windows and Dane said on average they see about 10 cats a month.
“Cats are more popular here than in Cody and we really weren’t expecting it,” he said.
Doggie Daycare offers a day of supervised play with friends, as well as structured nap time. There are both half and full-day options.
“If someone is going to Billings for the day, or if they just need their dog to burn some energy while they’re at work, they just drop them off for a small fee and burn energy all day,” Dane said. “A lot of other places have them in a kennel the whole time. We have them in a constant rotation from 7:30 in the morning until 6 at night. They’re burning energy all the time.”
There’s even a self-service wash station with tubs, dryers and basic supplies provided.
“If anybody needs a dog wash between hours, it’s $15,” Dane said. “They can come in, use all of our supplies and wash their animals.”
Coming home
Leigh started the Cody business in a chicken coop on their property in 2001 when Dane was just 5. He grew up there and said his first job was picking up dog poop.
The family debated for years about opening a second location, and when they found the building in Powell, which also had a house on site, they decided to go for it.
“I went to college, got married and started a family,” Dane said. “The Powell business sounded like a good plan, so we jumped at the opportunity.”
While the building is unrecognizable from its original state, Dane said there’s still more remodeling to be done, including the back rooms.
“We’ve just been kind of slammed with dogs and had to hold back on remodels,” Dane said. “Last year we were supposed to get the rooms done, and then the entire drain system collapsed on us. It’s been a crazy process getting this place up and running, but it’s been fun.”
Dane said they hope to add a splash pad in the future as well.
“I’m just trying to map out the water lines and pricing for it,” he said. “I wanted to do something for that summer time.”
