The Powell speech and debate team brushed up on a skill earlier this month — how to run a tournament.
The team hosted a tournament Nov. 8 at Northwest College, the first time in five years the college has hosted such an event.
“The tournament was a great success from a hosting standpoint. We ran on time and the attending teams really enjoyed it,” PHS debate coach Shelby Moore said. “This was the first time that NWC had hosted a high school tournament in almost five years, and before that it was one of the most popular tournaments of the season. I used to help host it when I competed for NWC on their speech team, so helping to bring it back felt like a very special opportunity for collaboration.”
With Powell playing host at the local venue, Panther varsity speakers helped run the tournament while novice competitors were able to place.
“I think that the biggest highlight is the way that our captains, Kyra Morrow, Natalie Black, and Geo (Layla) Dillworth, as well as our upper classmen stepped up to run the tournament and keep everything organized,” Moore said. “They helped the tournament to run smoothly and showed leadership and responsibility.”
The event went so well there are already plans for another joint host tournament in January 2027. Moore said they’re hoping for the next one to be larger with more chances for community involvement.
