The Powell High School girls’ track and field team finished second during a quick trip to Cowley on Saturday, adding two new individual state qualifying marks as the Panthers fought in a close race despite resting some competitors at the event.
“I felt the girls had a great meet even though we were missing some and resting others,” coach Scott Smith said. “Some of our girls did a great job of getting marks that will help them qualify for the classic, which was our goal in some cases.”
New Panther qualifiers came in the longest distance race, as Shelby Zickefoose placed fourth and added the 3200 meters with a time of 11 minutes, 47.06 seconds, while Anyston Keller earned her first individual qualification in the same event taking sixth with a time of 12:04.44.
Powell had five event wins at the meet, as Kaytlee George won the 200 meters in 26.54 seconds and the 400 meters in 59.76 seconds; Kate Williams won the pole vault clearing 8 feet, 6 inches; Paige Sanders won the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 4 1/4 inches and Nalani Jordan won the discus with a throw of 124 feet, 7 inches.
The Panthers also had a number of top five finishers, including Audrey Johnson who placed second in the 100 meter dash (13.64); Lynea Christensen placed second in the 400 meters (1:04.69); Karee Cooley took second in the 3200 meters (11:36.98); Sanders placed third in the 200 meters (27.96) and fifth in the 100 meters (13.79); Keller took third in the 800 meters (2:40.72); Vera Thomas was third in the 100 meter hurdles (17.97); Keylyn Knuth took third in the high jump (4-9); Jordan was third in the shot put (36-8); Kara Sanders took fourth in the 800 meters (2:41.28); Williams placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.16); Anai Torres placed fourth in the discus (111-7 1/2) and George added a fifth place finish in the long jump (15-0 1/2).
As a team the Panthers took second with 164.5 points, just 5.5 behind winner Lovell.
With the season quickly winding down the Panthers have two weeks of the regular season remaining, with two meets on the schedule this week.
The first meet will be for a select few on Friday, as the Wyoming Track Classic will take place in Casper at Kelly Walsh High School.
It will be an all-class affair, as the top eight in each track event, 12 in the 1600 and 3200 meter races, as well as the top nine in field events are invited to participate.
Athletes will be restricted to entering two total events, with field events starting at 4 p.m. and track events beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The second meet of the week will be a much shorter trip on Saturday, as Powell will head to Lovell for an invitational.
The final meet of the regular season will be next Thursday in Cody.
“We will finalize our regional team in the next two meets as well as get that last push of conditioning while transitioning more strategy and technique where appropriate,” Smith said.
