Park County Landfill ups rates for a few waste items

Posted

The Park County Landfill is charging more for a few specific waste items to keep from being far below the regional average.

At the July 15 meeting, commissioners unanimously approved rate hikes for waste tires, petroleum contaminated soil and non friable asbestos.

“Those rates put us below the average for other entities,” said Travis Ball, who manages landfill operations for the county.

He talked with seven other counties, from Fremont to Campbell, Sheridan to Washakie.

Waste tires have the biggest impact on the landfills, he said, as he said it seems to be a “never ending pile.”

Ball said there’s been a fair amount of large dumps of petroleum contaminated soil from mostly, but not all, county oil companies. For instance, he said the Rawhide Field northwest of Meeteetse hauled 130-140 tons of contaminated soil to the Cody landfill on one day.

And there’s been businesses from far away, Ball said, that have determined to dump contaminated soil or asbestos in Cody rather than a closer dump. He said with the rates still below average, the dump should still keep local and some regional business.

Rate changes effective Aug. 1

Fee for waste tires will be raised from $165 per ton (current rate) to $180 per ton for Park County customers and $215 per ton for waste tires brought in from outside Park County.

Fee for petroleum contaminated soil (PCS) shall increase from $20 per ton to $45 per ton for PCS that can be readily used as cover material for PCS generated within Park County. PCS with higher concentrations of contaminants requiring special handling, sampling, analyses, staging and processing will be charged at a rate of $70 per ton for PCS generated within Park County. PCS brought in from outside Park County will be received for a fee of $60 per ton for PCS that has lower concentrations of contaminants and can be used for cover soil. PCS from outside Park County that require special handling, testing, staging, and/or processing will be accepted for a fee of $135/ton.

Fee for Non-Friable Asbestos will be increased from $90/ton to $100/ton for waste derived from within Park County. Non-friable asbestos containing waste derived from outside of Park County will be received for a fee of $125 per ton.

Friable asbestos containing materials are not accepted at any Park County landfill.
