Park 1 superintendent contract renewed

Park County School District 1 Superintendent Jay Curtis is under contract through the 2027-2028 school year after school board members unanimously agreed to extend his contract and give him a raise and a couple of extra vacation days.

The $5,000 raise Curtis had requested is a 2.7% bump to his 2025 salary of $185,500, a lower percentage than that given to teachers, administrators and others who also received raises despite not being covered by the large amount of funds from the state now dedicated to teacher salaries.

Trustees gave the assent along with words of praise for his leadership during one of the most trying periods in Wyoming education, as school districts have grappled with the first recalibration in many years.

“I just wanted to thank Jay for everything he does for us,” board member Lillian Brazelton said.

“It is an honor and a privilege to hold this chair,” Curtis replied as other trustees added words of praise.

The board had two lengthy executive sessions at both of May’s meeting to discuss other potential tweaks to the contract requested by Curtis in regards to his severance package. After the May 12 executive session board members approved the salary increase and extra vacation days with the contract language changes pending attorney review, but after the May 28 executive session they unanimously voted to keep the language already in the current contract aside from the previously granted raise and two extra vacation days.
