Panthers win regular season finale

Triple jump record falls

Strong performances at the Cody Trackstravaganza on Thursday led the Powell Panther girls’ track and field team to another win to end the regular season. Panther sophomore Paige Sanders stood out among the rest as she broke the school record in the triple jump.

Sanders took the top spot in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 1/4 inch, becoming the first Panther girl in history to jump over 37 feet and breaking the old record of 36 feet, 8 1/2 inches, set by Waycee Harvey just over one year ago.

“Paige has been consistently improving all year, and seeing her break the record was awesome,” coach Scott Smith said.

In addition to Sanders, the Panthers took the top spot in a number of events, including two multiple event winners.

Audrey Johnson swept the sprinting events, winning the 100 meter dash in 13.07 seconds, the 200 meters in 26.63 seconds and the 400 meters in 1:00.87; while Kinley Cooley won the 800 meters in 2:19.99 and the 1600 meters in 5:31.44.

Johnson added the 100 and 200 meters to her state qualifying events and Cooley added the 800 meters.

The Panther’s final victor was Nalani Jordan in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 4 inches.

Powell added a number of second place finishes, as Kindyle Floy placed second in the 200 meters (27.76) and the 400 meters (1:04.38); Kenna Jacobsen placed second in the 800 meters (2:25.5); Karee Cooley placed second in the 1600 meters (5:32.36); Shelby Zickefoose took second in the 3200 meters (12:29.12); Sanders took second in the long jump (16-7); Anai Torres placed second in the shot put (34-3 3/4) and Jordan took second in the discus (123-1).

Strong performances in the distance events helped Jacobsen add the 800 meters to her state qualifying events, while Jordan’s strong throw in the discus set a personal best as the first Panther to throw over 120 feet this season.

“Our distance girls are very talented and deep. The new automatic qualifiers give us difficult decisions, but they are all good decisions,” Smith said. “It was nice to see Nalani break through with a great throw last week. It has been there all along and this is definitely the best time of year to let it fly.”

Other top five finishes for the Panthers included Averie Warner who took third in both the 100 meters (13.31) and the 200 meters (27.8); Karee Cooley took third in the 800 meters (2:27.27); Jacobsen placed third in the 1600 meters (5:34.08); Kinley Cooley took third in the 3200 meters (12:31.67); Kate Williams placed third in the pole vault (9-0); Nyah Johnson was third in the discus (105-9); Sanders took fourth in the 200 meters (28.31); Stella Shoopman took fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (51.8); Abigail Visocky was fourth in the pole vault (7-6) and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles (52.74); Ryann Hutzenbieler was fourth in the triple jump (30-2); Eleasah Horsley took fifth in the 400 meters (1:05.34); Vera Thomas placed fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.08); Addy Brown was fifth in the long jump (14-8); Cambree Dicks placed fifth in the triple jump (30-1) and Torres was fifth in the discus (103-5).

As a team the Panthers scored 267 points, just ahead of Cody with 252 while a small contingent of Lovell Bulldogs made the trip and scored 28 points.

Powell now returns home for the first stop in the postseason, hosting the 3A West Regionals on Friday and Saturday at Panther Stadium.

It figures to be a difficult regional meet, as some of the top scoring teams and individual performers in 3A will converge on Powell for the two day meet.

Athletes who have not yet prequalified for the state meet in Casper next week will have an opportunity to punch their ticket, as the top eight individuals in each event and top four relays will qualify for state even if they do not reach prequalification standards.

Events are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the final event scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
