Two new swimmers joined the rapidly growing list of qualifiers for the Powell High School swim and dive team to end the year, as the Panthers made it six at the Terry Bartlett Last Chance Meet on Tuesday night in Cody heading to Gillette next week.
The first new qualifier was Tempie Day, who finished third in the 500 free and shaved nearly 18 seconds off her time to reach the qualifying mark by 11 seconds, with a time of 6 minutes, 38 seconds.
She was followed closely by Meredyth Giltner, who had a much closer finish as she came in .15 seconds under the qualifying mark in the 100 breaststroke, taking first with a time of 1:25.77.
“We thought we would be taking a Suburban to state,” coach Bailey Jackson said. “Turns out we need a bus.”
In addition to those new qualifiers, Autumn Kleinfeldt added the 100 free to her qualifying events with a second place finish of 1:04.85. She also won a quick 11 dive competition between her and one Cody competitor with a personal best score of 315.1.
Lynea Christensen added a win in the 50 free.
Claire Hultgren finished second in the 100 back (1:20.23) and Lily Paisley was third (1:40.78).
The relay team of April Weckler, Stella Leighton, Kleinfeldt and Hultgren won the 200 free relay with a time of 2:05.41.
The Panthers now have a week to prepare for the 3A State Championships in Gillette next Thursday and Friday. Catch a preview and full list of qualifiers and events in Tuesday’s Powell Tribune.
