The Powell Panther girls’ track team came out on top against some of the top 3A West teams Saturday, winning the LA Kohnke by 20 points powered by five individual victories and one relay win at Powell High School.

Four of those victories came on the track for the Panthers, who swept the 400-3200 meter races.

That first win came from Audrey Johnson, who won the 400 meters in just over a minute, with a time of 1:00.87.

Kenna Jacobsen took the top spot in the 800 meters with a time of 2:31.89, while Kinley Cooley swept the 1600 and 3200 meter races with times of 5:25.29 and 12:11.03 respectively.

“I was really excited to see how well our girls’ runners performed,” coach Scott Smith said. “The performances in the 400 through the 3200 races show how hard the entire team has been working.”

The final Panther victory came in the triple jump, where Paige Sanders took the top spot with a leap of 34 feet, 11 inches.

Powell’s lone relay win came in the 1600 sprint medley, as the quartet of Kindyle Floy and Johnson along with Kinley and Karee Cooley won by nearly 14 seconds with a state qualifying time of 4:26.49.  Smith noted that the sprint medley team is approaching a new school record.

Additional state qualifying marks included both of the Cooleys in the 1600 meters as Karee finished second behind her sister with a time of 5:26.49; Sanders added the long jump with a leap of 16-5 1/2 after placing third and the 4x800 relay of Myah Rakness, Eleasah Horsley, Shelby Zickefoose and Macie Velasco earned a second qualifying time in that event with a time of 10:31.02 to finish third.

Additional top five Panther finishes included Zickefoose taking second in the 3200 meters (12:33.17); Floy taking third in the 200 meters (27.98) and high jump (4-9); Anai Torres taking third in the discus (115-4) and fourth in the shot put (32-8); Nalani Jordan taking fourth in the discus (115-2) and fifth in the shot put (31-10 1/2); Jacobsen taking fifth in the 1600 meters (5:34.5); Horsley taking fifth in the 3200 meters (13:36.08) and Nyah Johnson taking fifth in the discus (108-2).

Overall the Panthers took the team title with 150 points, 20 ahead of second placed Lander while Worland was third with 99.5 points and Cody was fourth with 96.5 points.

“I feel really good about our girls beating Lander and Cody, two of the top three teams in state rankings at this point,” Smith said. “It is still early and we have a lot of improvement to get where the girls could be, but there is a lot of potential for postseason success.”

Smith said that the LA Kohnke was successful and ran smoothly throughout the day, thanks to a group of volunteers.

“I’d like to thank all of the volunteers that helped put this meet on,” Smith said. “Fifteen teams with over 500 athletes is a difficult task and the meet went fantastically because of their great service to the kids.”

The Panthers are scheduled to make the trip to Worland on Tuesday to take part in an invitational, which was moved up due to forecasted wintry weather later in the week.

The Panthers’ next meet will be Thursday, April 24, in a dual on the road against Cody.
