Downtown Powell will once again be the site for Paint the Town Red, hosted by Northwest College on Friday, Aug. 22 from 4-10 p.m. The eighth annual event includes live music, food trucks, games, and activities for all ages.

Paint the Town Red is one of Powell’s biggest and most popular events, bringing Northwest College and the community together as a celebration of their decades-long partnership. The late August setting coincides with the beginning of a new academic year for NWC and other area schools, introduces students to everything the town offers, and allows them to meet area residents and business owners.

Headlining this year’s entertainment is The Jared Stout Band, an alt-country powerhouse based out of southwestern Virginia. The band is redefining the boundaries of country and rock by seamlessly weaving Appalachian rhythms with bluesy undertones that create a tapestry of emotion and energy. Fronted by the soulful and relatable songwriting of Jared Stout and backed by a group of talented and emotionally charged musicians, their performances take audiences on an emotional journey through life’s ups and downs, according to the release.

This year’s opening musical act is Dulcet River, a musical duo featuring Kathy and Tom Walker who perform a blend of original music with a variety of musical genres while covering artists such as George Strait, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, REM, Coldplay, and many others. Known for their creative acoustic arrangements, strong vocals, and engaging performances, the couple has been performing locally since 2017.

Dulcet River takes the stage at Plaza Diane at 5 p.m., followed by The Jared Stout Band from 6-8 p.m.

In addition to the musical performances, other scheduled activities include:

• Activities led by the NWC Art Department

• Balloon animals

• Recreation activities by the NWC Outdoor Recreation Department

• Rock climbing wall

• Athletic activities featuring the NWC Trappers

• Laser Tag

• Dunk booth

• Esports competition

• Simulators from the NWC Center for Training & Development

• Children’s petting zoo

• Street dance

Also returning in 2025 is a beer garden, hosted by the Northwest College Alumni Association.

Food vendors will be serving from 4-8 p.m., and many downtown restaurants will also be open for those who wish to dine inside. Visitors can also receive free photo prints at the event by tagging their Instagram and Twitter posts with #PaintTheTownRedPowell.

Area residents and businesses are reminded that Bent Street will be closed to vehicle traffic between First and Third streets from 1-10 p.m.
