The Meeteetse Ice Fishing Derby was canceled Wednesday, as it became clear that holding the event could be unsafe due to thin ice.
“We are very sad to announce that our board of directors has voted to cancel the 2026 Ice Fishing Derby due to unfavorable weather. Though we have tried to hold onto the event with our best effort, safety has to be the priority when dealing with ice,” said Codi Brooke, Director of Discover Meeteetse in a social media post. “Thank you for your patience and understanding through the roller coaster this year!”
The event is by far the largest fundraiser for Discover Meeteetse and the board will be chewing on the idea of an open water derby later this year.
Much higher than average temperatures, including several record days this month, has caused the cancellation of several ice fishing derbies in Wyoming this year.
