A 30-year-old Powell man was arrested early Friday morning, after he allegedly stole an SUV from the Homesteader Park rest area.
Jonathan C. Padilla is facing a felony count of theft in connection with the incident. He remained in the Park County Detention Center on Monday, with bail set at $3,000 cash.
Charging documents say Padilla had been dropped off at the rest area late Thursday night, following a reported altercation with his parents. At some point after that, he’s alleged to have stolen a 2021 Nissan Rogue and driven it back to his parents’ home a few miles north of town.
Padilla’s mother called 911 at 3:39 a.m. Friday and reported that Padilla had broken into the home, charging documents say.
Powell police responded while Park County Sheriff’s deputies were en route, and they ordered Padilla to come out of the residence with his hands up, charging documents say. He complied and police detained him around 4 a.m.
Padilla reportedly told police that a woman named “Avery” had given him permission to take the Rogue. However, right around that same time, the registered owner of the Wisconsin-plated vehicle called 911 and reported it had been stolen from the rest area.
The owner “informed dispatch that he did not know anyone out here in Wyoming and that he had not given anyone permission to drive his vehicle,” Powell Police Officer Caleb Schmidt wrote.
A preliminary hearing in the case is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 3.
