CHEYENNE — The Wyoming Legislature recognized the outstanding young leaders selected as top delegates from Boys and Girls State programs during its final week.

Girls State Gov. Aspen Sewell of Saratoga, and Boys State Gov. Tony Salgado, of Cody, addressed the body to share their experiences in the program. According to a press release, the recognition underscores Wyoming’s commitment to fostering the next generation of civic leaders and highlights the importance of youth participation in governance.

The programs, organized by The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, offer high school students immersive experiences in the functions of government, emphasizing leadership, civic engagement and the legislative process.

During their time at Boys and Girls State, delegates run for office, deliver speeches and participate in elections to assume leadership roles such as governor, senator and other state and local positions within their simulated governments. These experiences aim to provide them with firsthand knowledge of the electoral process and the responsibilities of public service, preparing them to be future leaders in their communities.

In addition to their legislative interactions, the delegates met with Gov. Mark Gordon, Secretary of State Chuck Gray, Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder, State Auditor Kristi Racines and Treasurer Curt Meier.

“The Boys and Girls State programs are about more than just learning how the government works — they are about inspiring the next generation of leaders,” said Alyssa Hinckley, director of Wyoming Girls State. “Seeing these young men and women engage with our state’s top elected officials and legislators reinforces the importance of civic education and leadership development. Their enthusiasm and commitment to public service give me great confidence in the future of Wyoming.”

The Boys and Girls State programs in Wyoming have long been instrumental in educating students about the intricacies of state and local government. Participants are assigned to roles within a simulated government structure, allowing them to experience firsthand the challenges and responsibilities of public service. Throughout the week-long program, delegates draft and debate legislation, participate in elections and engage in mock trials, providing a comprehensive understanding of the democratic process.
