Northwest College will celebrate International Education Week from Nov. 18-22, with a series of events highlighting the college’s connection to the world at large. All community events are in the evening, free and open to the public.
Schedule of events
• Tuesday, Nov. 19, 6-7:30 p.m., International Literacy Night (Hinckley Library)
All elementary school students and their families are invited to an engaging educational evening where NWC education majors will collaborate with NWC international students to offer literacy activities that highlight the diverse cultural heritages represented. Elementary students and their families will have the chance to taste international foods and receive intercultural books to take home and share with loved ones.
• Wednesday, Nov. 20, 7 p.m., Journey to the Khmer Empire: Taking NWC Students to Southeast Asia (Harriet Bloom-Wilson Intercultural House)
NWC Professor of Anthropology Dr. Greg Smith will present about this international education experience in which he led a field studies course to Cambodia and Thailand in May 2024. He will cover the initial planning, recruiting students, teaching an associated class on the archaeology of Southeast Asia, the 12-day trip itself, and conclude with the follow-up research his students did after the trip. NWC Associate Professor of Photography Anthony Polvere joined the group, and the presentation will prominently feature his photography. A sampling of popular Cambodian and Thai treats will be available.
• Thursday, Nov. 21, 7 p.m., Exploring the Beauty of Latin America: A Celebration of Diversity (Harriet Bloom-Wilson Intercultural House)
Embark on a journey through Latin America with our NWC Fulbright Spanish Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) from Argentina, Jorge Aponte, along with the NWC Spanish Club where we will explore the great variety of landscapes, nature, culture, traditions, and attractions that Latin America has to offer. A sample of authentic Latin American snacks will be served.
• Friday, Nov. 22, 7 p.m., Discovering Germany: A Cultural Journey (Harriet Bloom-Wilson Intercultural House)
Join the presenters for an informational program dedicated to exploring the culture and traditions of Germany. NWC’s two Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) students from Germany will share their unique experiences and perspectives through a multimedia presentation. A selection of traditional German snacks will be served.
International Education Week celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.
