Another trip over the mountain paid dividends for the Powell High School indoor track and field team, as the Panther girls’ triple jump record fell for a second straight week while the 4x200 school record also fell in Gillette on Saturday.
Once again leading the way was Paige Sanders, as the junior extended her triple jump record with a leap of 35 feet, 5 inches, finishing second in the event.
On the track the Panther girls broke the school’s 4x200 record, as the group of freshman Kaytlee George, juniors Sanders and Ashlee Jacobsen as well as senior Audrey Johnson set the new record with a time of 1 minute, 54.99 seconds to finish sixth.
Coach Scott Smith noted that George ran a great leg as a freshman for the Panthers, as a number of freshmen have already been putting up strong performances for the program.
Karee Cooley continued her dominance, as she placed third in the 1600 meters with a state qualifying time of 5:32.26, fourth in the 3200 meters with a time of 12:25.15 and sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.63.
Sanders added a fifth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 15-11 1/4.
“Paige has been jumping great this year with two school records in two meets in the triple and both meets being within three inches of Anissa Warner’s long jump record,” Smith said. “She showed her grit last weekend staying late after one of the buses left to compete in finals in the long jump and had two improvement jumps in finals to move up from ninth to fifth.”
Another top finisher for Powell was freshman Anyston Keller, who finished top eight in the 3200 meters (13:17.24) and 1600 meters (5:45.61) with placements of fifth and sixth respectively.
“Karee and Anyston had great meets running all three of the 800, 1600 and 3200. That is really tough to do and they both ran fantastic times,” Smith said.
Overall the Panther girls finished with 36 points to take eighth out of the 18 teams, placing as the second highest 3A team behind Torrington in fifth with 57. Thunder Basin took the team crown by 32 points over second place with 109.
The highest placement for the boys’ team came from the sprint medley relay team of sophomores Brayden Benander, David Stearns and Alex Werner, alongside senior Korbyn Warren with a time of 4:01.21 to take second place.
That was the lone event to score points for the Panthers to finish with eight points and 14th overall in the standings, fifth among 3A teams.
Despite not a lot of high scoring points wise, Smith noted the team overall had 39 personal records and five season bests at the meet including junior Kaden Wolff throwing a more than 5-foot PR in the shot put (41-0 1/4), Werner running a 57.92 in the 400 meters and freshman Harper Havron finishing in the top 20% for both the 55 meters (7.12) and 200 meters (25.42).
Sheridan took the boys’ team crown with 99.5 points, winning by 22.5 points over second place.
Following that meet with a number of strong performances, Smith said the team will be looking to rest some athletes while continuing to practice as the Panthers will not return to Gillette again until next weekend on Friday, Feb. 6.
“We will be watching kids closely and some are pretty sore and may need a bit of rest,” Smith said. “On the track we will be working a lot on speed conditioning while throwers will continue to focus on technique with coach (Zack) Coombs.”
He added that in addition to those broken records, there are quite a few in danger of being broken soon.
