Homesteader roots looks for more yards to plant trees

Posted

Josh Pomeroy of the Homesteader Roots program has helped plant 39 trees in Powell yards in the first four or so years of the program, but he’s not looking to give up any time soon.

“We have a goal of well over 100,” he said.

Powell homeowners have until Thursday to apply to have a large deciduous shade tree or small ornamental tree planted in their yard.

The program offers homeowners a tree planted in their front yard for a $75 cost share if the resident meets all requirements. Trees must be planted in the front yard of a residence within Powell city limits. Pomeroy sources all of their trees from a local nursery, and once again local Boy Scouts will help plant the trees. Pomeroy said they’re tentatively planning to plant June 7.

“We love having the Boy Scouts to do it,” he said. “They’re always really excited to dig holes, and they get education and community service.”

The program subsidizes the cost of planting mature shade trees on the properties of private homes in Powell. The $75 charge for homeowners is roughly 25% of the cost for the tree, installation and maintenance for a year — the program covers the other 75% by donations.

Those interested need to apply, and if accepted Pomeroy will then present a list of typically five to six large shade trees or two to three different ornamental trees. For more information, email homesteaderroots@gmail.com or pick up an application at the Powell chamber.
