Griffin signs to Carroll College

Recent Powell High School graduate Dawson Griffin signed his letter of intent on May 20 to continue his basketball career at the next level, competing at NAIA school Carroll College starting this fall in Helena, Montana.

“Since I was born really I had a ball in my hands,” Griffin said. “I just loved basketball growing up, my brother was a big influence on me even while I was younger. He used to play here, he taught me the competitiveness of basketball. I just fell in love with the game ever since, and I knew from when I was a child I wanted to continue at the next level.”

Griffin first saw varsity action for the Panthers as a sophomore before playing more as a junior off the bench, getting playing time as part of the undefeated state championship team in 2023-24 while also competing against that same championship team each day in practice.

“At first I was upset (not starting) because I wanted to be able to get the good exposure, playing time and play against better competition. But I also got to play against one of the best teams that Powell has ever seen, and it was a very good learning moment for me and to get more experience,” Griffin said. “It helped me learn a lot as a player and I’m very grateful.”

As a senior, Griffin jumped into the starting lineup and averaged 7.9 points per game for the Panthers while also adding 2.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds.

Along with basketball, Griffin played safety for the Panther football team, but ultimately decided he wanted to pursue basketball at the next level instead of football.

“Just the love I have towards it (basketball). I can never get tired of it,” Griffin said. “There’s always new things I can learn about. It always gets super exciting every time I want to play, I love playing new competition. I love the memories I got to build, being with my friends, teammates, my coaches and the hardships I go through. It’s just a wonderful time.”

Over his past four years as a Panther, Griffin said his coaches were a big part of getting him to this point, helping him develop as a person not just on the court.

“They’re a pretty big part of it for sure. They taught me a lot of what I need to become a better player on and off the court, and just as a good person in general,” Griffin said.

During the recruiting process Griffin said that he was looking at moving further away at first, but he later decided he wanted to stay closer to home. The campus in Helena was one reason that helped convince him to choose the Saints.

“At first I really wanted to try to get out of the area more, but as I went on my visits it made me realize I want to start off closer,” Griffin said. “Carroll College is a beautiful place, I love the campus, a really great coach and I just fell in love with it quickly … Coaching was a big thing, my brother went there for football. So I knew a little bit about the campus already.”

Griffin heads to a program that finished with a 15-15 record last season and lost in the semifinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament.

“I want to be a competitive player who wants to help that team succeed and be the best of the best. Be on top, and not only have a competitive spirit and competitive personality with time, I want to have a good time and be able to make memories with those new teammates,” Griffin said. “I’m very grateful for all the people who supported me, closest friends through the ups and downs, and all glory to God. He’s been the biggest part of this process and I’m very thankful for it.”

Griffin said he is leaning towards majoring in business and marketing or pre-med.
