GOP candidates win top elected positions

CHEYENNE — It will come as no surprise to anyone that the Equality State’s top five elected positions were all won by Republicans in Tuesday’s general election.

In the race for Wyoming’s highest statewide office, Republican gubernatorial candidate and state Sen. Eric Barlow of Gillette easily defeated his two challengers, Constitution Party candidate Rebecca Bextel, who finished second, and Democratic candidate Kenneth Casner.

Barlow received 128,480 votes statewide. Bextel came in second with 31,438 votes. Casner finished in third statewide with 27,469 votes, but was the second-highest vote-getter in Laramie County with 5,779.

Barlow was the overwhelming favorite in Park County too with 64.82% of the vote (7,769), with Bextel doing much better than her statewide average with 25.07% of the vote (3,005). Kasner finished with just 9.41% (1,128).

Barlow released a statement in which he thanked both his opponents and pledged to work for Wyoming.

“Wyoming families deserve a government that listens, spends responsibly and delivers dependable service,” he wrote. “We have work to do to improve access to healthcare, support our schools and strengthen the industries that sustain our communities. We must protect our water and respect private property rights while creating opportunities for new businesses and investment. Above all, we need a Wyoming where our young people can choose to build careers, raise families and make their futures here.”

Republican Robert Short was declared the winner for secretary of state, earning 124,924 votes statewide. The runner-up was Democratic candidate Bryan McCarty, who received 43,872 votes statewide. Former state Rep. Tamara Trujillo of Cheyenne, who was the Constitution Party candidate, finished third with 15,504 votes statewide.

Casper state Rep. Steve Harshman easily won the race for Wyoming superintendent of public instruction, with 136,744 votes statewide; Democrat Ana Cardova finished as the runner up, receiving 38,969 votes.

Incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder chose to run for governor this year, but lost to Barlow in the Republican primary back in August.

Incumbent Republican Curt Meier ran unopposed for state treasurer and will retain his seat. He received 155,009 votes of support statewide.

Similarly, current Republican State Auditor Kristi Racines was unopposed and will retain her seat. She got 155,787 votes of support statewide.
