Win Lovell, add new qualifiers

Strong performances in both Casper and Lovell led to a strong Friday for the Powell Panther track and field team, as the Panthers had six top eight finishes at the Wyoming Track and Field Classic and five individual wins in Lovell to take the team title by 59 points.

WYOMING TRACK CLASSIC

Five Panthers made the trip down to Casper on Friday, competing against the top performers in each event regardless of classification.

Sisters Kinley and Karee Cooley broke the school record previously held by Kinley by more than six seconds in the 1600 meter run.

Kinley got the better of Karee, placing fourth with a time of 5 minutes, 18.63 seconds, while Karee was sixth with a time of 5:19.9.

“The kids did a great job of competing against some of the best in the state,” coach Scott Smith said. “Kinley and Karee both breaking Kinley’s old school record by six or seven seconds is amazing.”

Powell also got another fourth place finish from Audrey Johnson, who finished the 400 meters with a time of 58.91.

“I was really impressed with Audrey not only breaking one minute in the 400, but skipping 59 and getting into the 58s,” Smith said.

Paige Sanders continued her strong season, taking fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 9 3/4 inches, and sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 1 inch.

Shelby Zickefoose took eighth in the 3200 meters with a time of 12:22.43 as the final Panther competitor.

Powell finished eighth and was tied as the second highest scoring 3A team with 22 points, only behind Lander which placed fifth with 43 points.

LOVELL INVITE

Competitors who did not go to Casper made their mark at the Lovell Invite on Friday, where the Panthers added new state qualifiers while taking the top spot in several events.

One of those new qualifiers and victors was Kenna Jacobsen, who won the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.42 and the 3200 meters with a time of 12:05.94, qualifying in the 3200 meters but just missing out on the 800.

Other winners included Kate Williams in the pole vault (8-6), Anai Torres in the shot put (34-4) and Nalani Jordan in the discus (111-5).

Kindyle Floy was the other Panther qualifier, earning a spot in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.09 seconds.

Powell also took the top spot in two relays, as the quartet of Myah Rakness, Floy, Autumn Kidd and Jacobsen won the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:30.81, and the team of Averie Warner, Floy, Eleasah Horsley and Rakness won the 1600 sprint medley with a time of 4:36.3.

The 1600 sprint medley team earned a state qualifying time, the third such version of the relay to qualify for the Panthers.

“It is always nice to get new qualifiers and makes it even better when it is a mix of relays and individuals,” Smith said.

Other top five finishes for the Panthers included Macie Velasco who took second in the 3200 meters (13:18.63) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:42.15); Nyah Johnson placed second in the discus (108-7 1/4); Stella Shoopman placed third in the 100 meter hurdles (18.42) and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (52.29); Abigail Visocky took third in the 300 meter hurdles (51.58), fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.63) and fourth in the pole vault (8-0); Horsley took fourth in the 400 meters (1:04.62); Jordan placed fourth in the shot put (32-11); Sharae Shoopman took fourth in the discus (101-3); Warner took fifth in the 100 meters (13.26); Cambree Dicks took fifth in the long jump (14-8 1/2) and Sam Edgell was fifth in the discus (98-10 1/2).

Overall the Panthers finished with 168.5 points, placing well ahead of second placed Lovell which had 109.5.

The Panthers will head out on the road once again for a short trip on Thursday, taking part in the Cody Trackstravaganza starting at noon.

That will be the final meet of the regular season before the Panthers host the 3A West Regional track meet on Friday and Saturday, May 16-17.
