Another flurry of goals helped the Powell Panther girls’ soccer team continue its undefeated start to the season, as the Panthers rolled past Lyman 9-1 and Mountain View 3-0 to begin the conference slate.
POWELL 9, LYMAN 1
Returning home to kick off 3A West action the Panthers (4-0 overall, 2-0 3A West) matched up with the Eagles (0-3 overall, 0-3 3A West) on Friday.
Ivy Agee got the Panthers on the board early through a long range effort, making it 1-0 in the first 2:30.
She extended the Panther advantage just 10 minutes later, scoring again from a long range effort to make it 2-0.
Jesi Agee got in on the action just over two minutes later, putting one of her own shots past the keeper to make it 3-0 with 24:50 left.
Ivy Agee capped off her hat trick with 21:03 left, and a fourth goal followed with 14:20 left to cap off one of the best halves of the season for the Panthers, who led 5-0 at the break.
“The large lead was nice, but I was very pleased with the way we took the lead,” coach Danny Agee said. “The ladies played the best I have seen them play and moved the ball and covered for each other very well. Every player was attacking well and that is so hard to defend against.”
Ava Gilliatt got the scoring started in the second half, finding the back of the net on a good move cutting inside on the wing, beating the Eagle keeper nearpost to make it 6-0.
Lyman got one on the board on a good counter-attack, putting it in the back of the net to cut the deficit to 6-1.
Powell answered with 20:57 remaining, when Ivy Agee’s corner was deflected in off a Lyman defender for an own goal to make it 7-1.
Patricia Christensen got her first goal of the season with 6:30 minutes remaining on a putback, and Veronica Kovach capped off the scoring with 3:14 remaining to make the final score 9-1.
Coach Agee said he was proud of the Panthers for their efforts, including those making their first appearances despite some early season injuries.
“It was great to have some players back and that definitely strengthened the formation a lot, but we still have a few players that are dealing with some injuries,” he said. “It will be nice when they are all fully healthy.”
POWELL 3, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0
After the win Friday the Panthers turned their attention to the Buffalos (0-2 overall, 0-2 3A West) trying to continue their undefeated start.
Unfortunately for Powell, a shift in the formation led to a slower start than usual against the visitors.
“We did move a few players around on Saturday and it took some time for them to settle down and play,” Agee said.
Despite the slower start the Panthers found the back of the net first, on another long-range shot from Ivy Agee with 24:55 remaining in the first half.
Powell created plenty of chances, but was unable to find the back of the net again in the first half against a tough Mountain View defense.
“You have to give credit to Mountain View as well, they sat back with all 11 players and made it impossible to get a simple goal,” coach Agee said.
The second half followed much of the first half, as Powell had to wait until 15 minutes left in the game, after a handling offense in the box, to earn a penalty kick.
Emery Hernandez slotted home the penalty for her first goal of the season.
Five minutes later Ivy Agee capped off the scoring with another goal after a good run by Ava Gilliatt found Agee in the box and she put it home to earn the 3-0 win.
ROAD CONFERENCE GAMES
Powell now heads out on the road for its next pair of conference games, making the trip south to take on Lander and Pinedale.
The Panthers will start with the Tigers (2-0 overall, 1-0 3A West) at 3 p.m. on Friday in a key early season match against the defending state champions.
Powell then finishes its road trip against the Wranglers (0-2 overall, 0-0 3A West) before heading into a mini break over the Easter holiday.
Coach Agee is hopeful the Panthers will keep developing over the next week, learning to play together more and making faster decisions as the season progresses.
“I think we are still learning when and how to use our teammates, and this decision making sometimes causes breakdowns against fast teams,” he said. “I hope that we can keep improving our team play and work to possess the ball as much as we can. This will slow down our opponent’s offense and help us control the flow of the games.”
