Gillette man stole hundreds of packages from UPS

GILLETTE (WNE) —- The 53-year-old man who admitted to stealing hundreds of packages from a UPS facility because it made him “feel alive” has been sentenced to prison.

On Nov. 6, Larry Munday pleaded guilty to felony theft, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of ketamine, and the state dropped a charge of cultivating marijuana.

On Jan. 22, District Judge Mike Causey sentenced Munday to five to seven years in prison for the felony theft, to run concurrent to a two- to three-year sentence for the other two charges.

Munday also must pay $28,500 in restitution to UPS.

The investigation into Munday began on June 10, according to court documents, when a local orthodontist and a Gillette gunsmith both reported missing packages.

On June 12, an investigator with the sheriff’s office spoke with the local UPS manager, who said that more than 100 packages had gone missing from the facility in the past two weeks. He said the missing packages all had been placed on a package car for overnight storage.

Cameras were set up on the package car and around UPS property. Several videos showed Munday, a night-time contract cleaner, coming out of the package car with white trash bags, which he put in his pickup, according to court documents.

Deputies searched Munday’s home and found UPS bags and packages.

Munday told deputies he began stealing packages in December 2023.  He said he didn’t have any friends or family he spent time with, and stealing the package made him feel like someone had given it to him, according to court documents.

He said he didn’t feel remorse for stealing the packages because UPS had insurance to cover the theft. He added that he didn’t sell the contents of the packages because he was doing fine financially but that he stole the packages to feel alive, according to court documents.
