Forward Cody to grant $200K to shooting complex by end of year

The Wyoming State Shooting Complex is getting a boost from Forward Cody.

The economic development group presented the board with a $100,000 check on Thursday — and CEO Jake Hogan said they’ll give another $100,000 later in the year.

Funding for the complex south Cody is multifaceted.

The complex’s joint powers board is receiving $10 million from the state that the Legislature pledged in 2023 and fully approved in the 2025 session. The board is also hoping to get another $3.5 million from the state’s tourism reserve and projects account that was initially approved by the House and Senate, but didn’t make it across the finish line amid a wild end to the winter session. That money could still be approved during the next legislative session.

On top of that, the proponents of the complex pledged to raise $6 million to meet the total $19.5 million needed to build and fund the early operations of the complex. Cody resident Scott Weber recently gave the project a boost by pledging $2 million from a trust to fund operations over a period after his death.

While fundraising efforts are still in the early stages, the board is also looking at ways to cut down on the total cost. One way to save some money would be to get all of the gravel for the complex roads right near the site, board member James Klessens said via Zoom at Thursday’s meeting. He is working with the Hoodoo Ranch, which leases the state land where the gravel pit is proposed to be located, to put the project together, which would provide gravel for both the ranch and the interior complex roads.

The county road that will lead from Wyo. Highway 120 South to the complex is still on track to get underway this summer, Klessens said, with the county set to begin work in August.
