A driver who gained internet infamy for wrecking his 2020 Ford Mustang in the Beartooth Mountains has paid a $240 penalty in connection with the crash.
Matthew Lund of Billings, who turns 37 this year, lost control of the Mustang while navigating one of the Beartooth Highway’s many curves. Lund drifted off the road, hit a boulder and rolled.
He was flown to Billings for medical care, but reportedly avoided serious injury.
The Aug. 31 wreck drew widespread attention after the Wyoming Highway Patrol shared a bystander’s video of the crash on Facebook. As of this week, Facebook stats show the video had been viewed over 13 million times.
“Make smart decisions on the road, folks,” the patrol wrote in part.
Among the 12,600 comments that users submitted on the patrol’s post, the most liked came from a former trooper in Riverton, who wrote, “When you have more horsepower than brain power.”
Others noted it was fortunate the crash didn’t occur near one of U.S. Highway 212’s steep drop-offs.
The Highway Patrol cited Lund for careless driving and wrote the ticket into the Park County Circuit Court’s Powell office as a forfeitable offense. That allowed Lund to pay $240 on Friday and close out the case without a court appearance.
