Cub girls’ track falls short in Lovell

Posted

Beautiful weather and the largest meet of the season greeted the Cub girls’ track teams on Saturday, as the seventh and eighth-grade girls set sights on two team titles at the Lovell Invitational.

The seventh grade team fell short in its pursuit, as the team finished third, 14 points behind Lovell and 43 points behind meet winner Cody.

On the eighth grade side, the girls came up just short of meet winners Cody, as the Cubs finished with 124 points just behind Cody with 132.

The seventh graders had one individual winner on the day, as Ashlee Jacobsen won the 400 meters with a time of 1:07.39.

Jacobsen was also part of the winning 4x400 relay team, along with Elizabeth Halberstadt, Eleasah Horsley and Montana Mixon, that finished with a time of 4:56.54.

The Cubs picked up points in the throwing events, as the trio of Leah Graham, Maddie Valdez and Rowan Borcher finished with three of the top eight spots in both the shot put and discus.

“The weather was great,” Cubs coach Zach Coombs said. “It played a big role in the kids’ performances.”

For the eighth graders, the Cubs again had one individual winner in Anai Torres, who won the shot put with a throw of 30 feet even.

The 4x400 team of Audrey Johnson, Nalani Jordan, Melissa Merritt and Josie Werner was victorious, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:41.42.

Despite not having her best day throwing the discus, Torres also placed second in the event, throwing 81 feet, 7 inches.

Coombs said that Torres is the third girl in history to throw over 30 feet in shot put and 85 feet in discus.

Johnson, who Coombs described as the workhorse of the eighth-grade girls’ team, also placed second in both the 200 and 400, and continues to place in the top two. Coombs added she has an amazing attitude.

Merritt picked up key points placing third in the 800 meters and second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:52.40.

In addition to Torres, the Cubs held five of the top eight spots in the discus to help close the gap against Cody.

The Cubs now head to Thermopolis on Saturday to take part in the conference meet starting at 9 a.m.

Any athletes who have qualified for the best of the best will then compete in Lander on Tuesday at the final meet of the season, which starts at 10 a.m.
