Seventh graders break relay record

Posted

The Powell Middle School girls’ track and field teams were dominant at the Powell Athletic Roundtable Middle School Invitational on Saturday, where the seventh grade girls broke a record and both teams won by double the nearest opponents’ score in the four team meet.

The seventh grade 4x100 relay team of Addie Gillett, Zaphira Paul, Lucy Ostermiller and Ann Trinh ran a 55.53 to break the record set by the now eighth graders last year.

“It was very impressive to see the seventh grade girls beat the record that was set by the current eighth graders last year,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “It shows the leadership and hard work all these girls have. Although it is track, they still see it as a team first. There is a ton of talent within these two teams and it will be exciting to see them all together in high school.”

Individual winners for the Cubs were Ostermiller in the 100 meters with a 13.8 and triple jump with a leap of 28 feet, 9 1/2 inches; Kaytlee George in the 400 meters (1:09.99) and long jump (13-3); Anyston Keller in the 1600 meters (5:59.17) and Paul in the 200 meter hurdles (33.2).

Other individual top performers came on Monday, when Keylyn Knuth cleared 4-0 in high jump, Paul cleared 6-6 in the pole vault and McKenzie Moger threw 50-1 in the discus.

Those events were held due to weather concerns heading into Saturday.

The seventh graders also swept the other two relays on Saturday, with George, Landyn Horsley, Keller and Kara Sanders winning the 4x400 in 4:54.26, while Horsley, Avery LeBlanc, Darby McKee and Sophie Erkkila won the 800 sprint medley relay in 2:13.03.

New Best of the Best qualifying marks included Ostermiller in the 100 meters, triple jump and 100 meters hurdles (19.23); George in the 400 meters and long jump; Paul in the 200 meter hurdles and 200 meters (30.33); Sanders in the 800 meters (2:52.23); Trinh in the long jump (13-1) and Gillett in the triple jump (26-10).

The seventh grade girls finished well ahead of the competition, earning 113 points while Thermopolis finished second with 41, Cody had 31 and Meeteetse had eight.

The eighth graders put on a just-as-dominant performance, scoring twice the points of the second place team with a host of first place finishes.

Kindyle Floy once again had a strong day, winning the 100 meters (13.35), 200 meters (28.44) and 400 meters (1:04.35), Peyton Ott won the long jump with a leap of 13-2 and Shai Hite won the shot put with a throw of 26-1.

One relay victory came from the eighth graders, as Abree Haney, Ott, Gracy Perry and Ily Williams won the 800 sprint medley relay with a 2:17.12.

Floy was tops for the Cubs in the high jump on Monday clearing 4-6, Abigail Visocky cleared 6-6 in pole vault and Shai Hite won the discus with a throw of 79-5.

A host of Cubs earned new Best of the Best qualifying marks, with Addy Brown qualifying in the 100 meters (13.93), 200 meters (29.15) and 100 meter hurdles (19.51); Stella Shoopman in the 100 meter hurdles (17.96), 200 meter hurdles (32.74) and triple jump (28-9 1/4); Autumn Kidd in the 800 meters (2:48.08) and 100 meter hurdles (19.83); Alaja Love in the 800 meters (2:48.08); Alyssa Wantulok in the 800 meters (2:48.81) and Perry in the 1600 meters (6:09.71).

A dominant day in the hurdles had the Cubs with five of the top eight in the 100 meter edition, with the group continuing to improve throughout the season.

“It was very exciting,” assistant coach Dale Estes said. “We have a great group of hurdlers this year that are very strong. They have been working hard on improving their form and speed over the hurdles.”

The eighth graders finished with 98 points, doubling up second place Cody which finished with 49, while Thermopolis had 19 and Meeteetse had 14.

The end of the season is fast approaching, with the Cubs heading to Thermopolis on Saturday to take part in the conference meet.

After that, those who are qualified for the Best of the Best will head to Lander on Tuesday to take part in the largest meet of the year competing against athletes from around the state regardless of school.

“This final week we are looking into fine tuning the little things as well as analyzing the strengths of each athlete,” Haney said. “We have some athletes who are very close to qualifying for the Best of the Best, so we are working on the small technical items in order to get them qualified.”
