Cody’s polarizing plastic domes to be removed

Posted

For the past two-and-a-half years, a set of transparent geodesic domes have sat outside the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce. They’ve hosted lunches and meet-ups — and drawn no shortage of strong opinions.

However, the domes’ tenure alongside the Cody chamber and visitor center are now coming to an end: The chamber announced last week that the structures are being removed and sold off.

In a post to Facebook, the chamber said that though the HypeDomes “have been well used and well-loved … use by the community has begun to dwindle, and the cost of necessary repair and maintenance to keep the HypeDomes safe has increased.” As a result, the chamber is taking sealed bids on the structures through Oct. 15.

Proceeds from the sale “will be donated for the community to use through the Cody Community Foundation and the Cody Fireworks Committee,” the chamber said.

The Park County Travel Council spent roughly $25,000 worth of federal CARES Act fund on the six domes. They were installed in early 2022, with Travel Council Executive Director Ryan Hauck describing them as “a great outdoor option to enjoy what we have and get people out of the wind.”

However, the domes also drew a number of complaints from local residents, generally around their modern appearance. As an indication of their still-controversial status, the Cody chamber didn’t allow comments on its Facebook post announcing the HypeDomes’ sale.
