For anyone interested in learning more about the City of Cody government, the city is accepting applications for its sixth Citizen Academy.
The academy offers residents a chance to learn more about the city’s operations through a series of informational sessions, tours and activities. Sessions will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting Sept. 16 and continuing through Nov. 4. A graduation ceremony will follow on Thursday, Nov. 12.
Sessions are taught by city administration, department heads and staff and provide an overview of city management, operations and procedures. Topics range from getting to know the leaders like the mayor and council members to the workings of the Cody Police Department to city permitting processes and water, garbage and electric services.
The city says the academy offers residents “a unique, behind-the-scenes look at local government while providing the opportunity to meet city leaders, tour city facilities, ask questions, and learn how the many departments work together to serve our community.”
A primary goal, the city says, is to strengthen community interaction and involvement.
Cody launched its first academy in 2015, with its most recent session in 2024. The City of Powell copied its neighbor’s idea by hosting its own academies in 2023 and 2025.
There is no cost to participate in Cody’s upcoming program, but residents do need to apply. The city says it will screen the submissions to ensure the participants reflect a cross-section of the community.
“We encourage applicants of all ages and from all walks of life — retirees, laborers, business owners and administrative professionals,” the city says, adding that, “Whether you’re a lifelong Cody resident or new to the community, the Citizen Academy is a great way to become a more informed and engaged citizen.”
Nominations and applications will be accepted until Aug. 31.
