Cody attorney Sam Krone will be taking on Park County drug court duties as its new magistrate.
Commissioners unanimously approved his appointment at the Aug. 5 meeting at the request of Circuit Court Judge Joey Darrah.
It's a part time, as needed position similar to other magistrate positions. Cody attorney Tom Keegan, for instance, is the backup magistrate judge for circuit court. Krone replaces judge Steven Cranfill as magistrate to cover Park County Treatment Court, with his fees paid through the state.
Krone, a former state representative for Cody, was reinstated to the Wyoming bar two years ago after having his license suspended in 2016, after he was found to have stolen more than $9,600 from a Park County lawyers group.
Krone began practicing law in 2001 and joined the Park County Attorney’s Office as a deputy prosecutor in 2003. He became active in public service, serving on the Cody City Council and as a legislator, representing House District 24 from 2011 through 2016.
In 2023 the state Board of Professional Responsibility found Krone had made a “compelling case” for reinstatement, saying he’d demonstrated he’d moved past the issues that led to his disbarment.
Since his reinstatement he has defended a number of high profile criminal cases both in his private practice and as a public defender.
