Cherry pie luncheon to benefit Girls State

Posted

The American Legion Auxiliary Cherry Pie Luncheon was started in 1968 as a fundraiser to send local girls to Wyoming Girls State, and it has been an annual event in Powell ever since.

This year’s luncheon will be held at the American Legion Hall, 143 S. Clark St. in Powell, from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21. Both dine-in and take-out lunches (no delivery) are offered at $10 a ticket with cash, check and credit card payments accepted; additional donations are also welcome.

There will be a selection of four casseroles to choose from: tuna, cheesy ham hashbrown, chicken and stuffing, or chicken spaghetti. Lunch also includes a fresh tossed salad, dinner roll and a cherry dessert. You have a choice of a slice of homemade cherry pie (regular or no sugar added), cherry dump cake, cherry brownie or cherry pretzel.  For those dining-in, there will also be coffee, water or lemonade. Your lunch ticket enters you to win door prizes.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from an auxiliary member or a legion bartender, call-in your take-out order at 307-254-1357, or just stop by. Proceeds support Wyoming Girls State delegates and veterans’ affairs.

Girls State is a week-long session in Cheyenne that helps girls learn leadership and social skills with an emphasis on government. It is open to girls who will be completing their junior year of high school, including those who are home schooled. See the school counselor for an application.
