A young Powell Panther boys’ track and field team competed well and tallied a relay title at the 3A Wyoming State Track and Field Championships in Casper, while finishing ninth and gaining valuable experience.
The title for the Panthers came in the 1600 sprint medley, composed of the team of Breckyn Kobbe, Karcher Foley, Sawyer Wormald and Liam Taylor, which finished with a time of 3 minutes, 40.3 seconds.
“Any state championship performance is special, but they all ran their legs perfectly and ran away from the field,” coach Scott Smith said.
Another Panther who put on a strong performance was Braxton Nelson, who finished third in the high jump clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.
He cleared the same height as the champion but finished third due to earlier misses.
Nelson also had a strong showing in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 1/4 inch.
“Braxton had a phenomenal state meet for any age, but even more so as a freshman,” Smith said. “He was able to get fully healthy and put it all together at the right time of the season.”
Powell also added a pair of hurdle finalists in the short form race, as sophomores Lincoln Crawford and Wormald made the final.
Crawford took sixth with a time of 17.25 seconds and Wormald was eighth with a time of 17.36 seconds.
“Hurdlers tend to get much better as they age so having those two young men make finals as sophomores was outstanding for them,” Smith said.
In the team standings the Panthers earned 32 points, and will bring back a majority of competitors who advanced to the state meet this year moving forward.
Lovell claimed the team title with 117 points to take its first ever 3A state championship just ahead of Cody in second with 110 points.
Smith said with a number of records being broken this year, it brought more excitement for the young Panthers to experience and hopefully take with them moving forward.
“It is always nice for the young kids to see the atmosphere related to the state meet to prepare for next year,” Smith said. “But for them to get to see the unusually large number of state records get broken really makes it fun.”
Powell will lose one competitor from this year’s state team, looking to build towards the future and return to contention.
