Anniversaries are usually celebrated with memories and joy. Some anniversaries are celebrated with resolve about something not yet completed. That is why this 15th anniversary for Backpack Blessings of Powell honors the work done by tireless volunteers and all those who support this program with generous donations and grants.
Students came to mind in the 2010-2011 school year when a local church was looking for a way to reach out in the community to help those in need, and thus Backpack Blessings began. The first year 30 parents responded to the letters sent out by the schools. Over time other churches became involved with the board of directors.
In September 2019, paperwork was submitted to become a nonprofit organization (Public Charity) 501(c)3 with a separate board. This board takes no direction from any individual church. Sharon Earhart, board president, says, “Donations and grant money have increased which is a direct result of a community-wide board having a greater network and more contacts made.”
Backpack Blessing of Powell provides food each school weekend for children experiencing food insecurities, from the four Park County School District 1 elementary schools (Westside, Parkside, Southside and Clark). The backpacks contain food for six meals, two drinks and two snacks per child on the program. As the need grows, so does the cost of food. Traditionally, more than 100 children have been served each week.
The board buyers are constantly looking for good deals on nutritious foods children can prepare themselves and will eat. A backpack can cost up to $10 per student per weekend. The funds donated are applied to purchasing food with 5% set aside for administrative costs.
As the board recognizes and shouts out a sincere thank you to the volunteers and to all the community of generous donors, this 15th year will be as successful as past years have been.
