Alice May Owen, the youngest of five children, was born on Dec. 7, 1931, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Charles and Lottie (Blum) Owen. She was the only one of her siblings to be born in a hospital. Her father worked in the oil patch and her family moved often. She attended four different high schools and in 1950 she graduated from Ada Senior High School in Ada, Oklahoma. After she graduated, her family moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma where she met the love of her life, Paul Jacobs Jr. They met while working in the same Sylvania Plant. They worked in different departments, but lunch hours afforded them the opportunity to meet, talk, court and finally marry.

Paul and Alice were married on Jan. 25, 1952, in Shawnee, Oklahoma and their 60-plus year journey began. Paul worked in the oil patch and from January of 1952 to December of 1960. His job took them to 27 different small communities in five states. Some towns, including Powell, they lived in multiple times. She told a story of them moving to Ray, North Dakota for three days. It was in the winter and was so cold Paul couldn’t get the 38 foot trailer, that he pulled behind their car, set up and thawed, so they moved back to Powell. During this eight-year period of moving and working, Alice became a mother three times. Calvin in 1953 in Powell, Nevin in 1956 in Cody (yes, Nevin is really a Cody Bronc) and Steven in 1958 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In 1960 the Jacobs clan, with three little boys in tow, moved back to Powell for the last time and added two more children, Cheryl in 1961, the only girl, and little Paul in 1963, the only redhead.

Paul left the drilling rigs in 1963 and became the owner/operator of the Mobile Service Station. Alice managed the household and the children, and what a manager she was. All her children learned to do each and every chore around the house. She made sure they all went to Sunday School and church on Sunday. There was always a big family dinner after church that continued until Paul passed away in 2012. When the children were older Alice ventured out of the house and into the workforce. She was a clerk for Young World, Montgomery Wards and Sears. She also worked at McGlathery’s Greenhouse and drove tractor for Churchill Farm during the harvest.

Alice loved to travel. She didn’t care if they were going to watch various events and activities of the kids or grandkids, camping in any of the beautiful mountains around Powell, making a cross country trip to Pennsylvania, touring by bus with her sister and/or friends, or driving to look at spring flowers or fall colors, Alice loved to go!

Alice was involved in the Hospital Auxiliary, Lady’s Birthday Club and Card Club. She was on a bowling league for several years, sang in the church choir at the First Southern Baptist Church and always enjoyed Bible Studies. Alice was a devout member of the First Southern Baptist Church and was extremely involved in the goings on of HER church.

Alice was an outgoing, opinionated and passionate woman. If she ever told you she loved you, know she did! Her final years were spent (when she wasn’t in the hospital after a fall) between the Manor, then a short stay at The Heartland and finally at the Powell Valley Care Center. Alice was loved and well taken care of at each place and her family is forever grateful to all staff members. She took her final breath Friday morning on May 19, 2023, at the PVCC, and stepped gently and quietly into the loving arms of her Savior Jesus.

Alice is survived by sons Calvin, Nevin (Deb), Steven (Barbara), and Paul III (Terri Voltmer), daughter Cheryl (Ed Bears), eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and favorite nephew Michael Holmes (Brenda). She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, parents Charles and Lottie, brothers Charles, Calvin and infant brother Clarence, sister Edna Holmes and grandson Ryan Turner Jacobs.

The celebration of the life of this remarkable woman will be on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 10 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church. There will be a reception for all immediately following with light snacks at the church. The family will gather later that afternoon for interment of her ashes, along with Paul’s, at the Crown Hill Cemetery — per her wishes. Memorials can be given to The Manor, First Southern Baptist Church, Powell Hospital Auxiliary or any charity of choice in her name.
