Ace Hardware’s plans to move into The Market’s former grocery store and take over the adjoining liquor store cleared a procedural hurdle on Monday.
In a unanimous vote, the Powell City Council agreed to transfer The Market at Powell’s retail liquor license to Powell Ace Hardware.
Powell Ace owner Bill Bregar previously told the Tribune that he intends to continue running the liquor store “just the same as it is now.” It will operate completely separately from the hardware store, which will move into the space that housed the grocery store.
Ace has long been on Bent Street, but “we’re certainly cramped for space where we are,” Bregar said.
The former grocery store building at First and Evarts will offer more than double the square footage.
The sale of the property is set to formally close on Nov. 15. Bregar said he hopes to have Ace in its new quarters “by early next year, whenever everything’s ready.”
