The No. 4-ranked Powell Panther volleyball team struggled against the No. 2-ranked 4A Cody Fillies in a high-powered Tuesday night matchup in Cody, with the hosts winning with a sweep and leaving the Panthers one step behind the entire night.

CODY 3, POWELL 0

(25-11, 25-17, 25-11)

In the second matchup of the teams this season, the Panthers (21-7 overall, 5-0 3A Northwest) were looking for a season sweep of the Fillies (20-2 overall, 5-0 4A Northwest) after Powell had won the earlier matchup in September at home.

Both teams came out early and battled for every point with Powell leading 5-3.

Cody then sco-red six straight, and pushed it further to 13-6 and forced a Powell timeout.

The Fillies continued to push the lead out to double digits on the way to handing Powell a 25-11 opening set loss.

“Things started to not go our way initially. They weren’t super bad, but we were a step behind on everything,” coach Lesli Spencer said.

The second set had Powell battling early, before Cody took the lead at 12-11 and pushed it out to 17-12 to force a Panther timeout.

Powell cut the lead down to 17-16 and forced a Cody timeout.

Out of the timeout the Fillies scored six straight and forced a second timeout from the Panthers, with Powell only scoring one of the final nine points in a 25-17 loss.

Cody looked to finish off the Panthers early in the third set, building an 11-5 lead to force a timeout and continually growing it out to double digits.

Powell got a couple of points late but ultimately lost 25-11 in the third set.

“We didn’t play well from beginning to end,” Spencer said. “We just weren’t quite on Tuesday night.”

Stats were not available from the match at press time — they will be added to the online version of the story once they become available.

FINAL HOME MATCH FRIDAY

Powell will have a few days to regroup, turning its attention to Lovell (12-15-1 overall, 1-4 3A Northwest) with the chance to finish the 3A Northwest season undefeated.

“We are not going to dwell on that match (Cody) very much, we’ve got to look at Lovell,” Spencer said. “We are looking to come out strong, play consistent and play our game while cleaning up our step-by-step play.”

If Powell wins it will be the second year in a row the Panthers have gone unbeaten in 3A Northwest play, as Powell has not lost to a team in its quadrant since 2021.

The Panthers already have the No. 1 seed locked up for regionals next week in Lander, and will wait to see if they play either the hosts Lander or Pinedale in the first round. The two teams are tied on record and play each other today (Thursday) to determine the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.
