Indoor track improves at Broncs Invite

Another trip to Gillette had the Powell Panther indoor track team competing at the Bronc Invite — a meet hosted by Sheridan with 10 teams in attendance on Friday where the Panthers continued to improve in their first season as an indoor team.

The lone victor for the Panthers on the day was Stuart Shoopman in the 55 hurdles (8.48), followed closely by Simon Shoopman in third (8.58).

“Simon and Stuart have been doing a great job of improving over the years in both indoor and outdoor track,” coach Scott Smith said. “It was nice to see Stuart get the win this week, but I make no prediction as to which will beat the other next race. They go back and forth and it is great to see them compete so well against the best in the state.”

Powell had one other placer inside the top eight individually for the boys, with Cody Seifert placing seventh in his first race of the season in the 55 meter dash (6.91).

“It was nice to see Cody get out and compete after the injuries he has been going through,” Smith said. “I know he would like to have been wrestling, but his shoulder just isn’t ready for that.”

The Panthers’ 1600 sprint medley placed third overall (4:02.25); composed of McKale Foley, Logan Jensen, Chance Franks and Daniel Merritt.

On the girls side, Kenna Jacobsen was the sole placer for the Panthers inside the top eight — finishing second in the 800 meters (2:30.93) and third in the 1600 meters (5:45.21).

“Kenna had a great week running a great mile time and turning around pretty soon and running a 2:30 in the 800,” Smith said. “She really does have a lot left in her that we are just starting to see.”

Brynn Hillman placed ninth in both of the distance races, finishing the 800 meters in 2:42.03 and the 1600 meters in 5:54.77.

“The kids have been real troopers as we leave at 5 a.m. for each of the meets and sometimes are still competing into the evening hours,” Smith said. “They are pretty tough kids.”

Powell takes this weekend off from traveling, before making the trip back to Gillette next week on Thursday — the final meet before the state meet the following weekend in Gillette.

Smith said the team will focus on conditioning this week and next in preparation for state, with coaches puzzling together how to get the best finishes possible for the kids.
