In what’s supposed to be a rebuilding year, Powell High School’s wrestlers finished second as a team at the 3A West Regional Tournament, had nine medal placers and 17 wrestlers advance to compete at state.

Breaking a five-game losing streak, Powell High School girls’ basketball team came away with two wins last weekend. The first came Friday night in Lander, 48-41, with the second being a 45-35 win over Riverton on Saturday at home.

Despite rallying to put up a season-best 80 points, Powell High School’s boys basketball team fell to Lander on Friday, then was bested by an undefeated Riverton squad on Saturday.

Hosting the National Junior College Athletic Association Rocky Mountain District Qualifier proved fruitful for the Northwest College wrestling team as nine individuals qualified for nationals and the Trappers placed first as a team. NWC head coach Jim Zeigler received the Rocky Mountain District coach of the year award and heavyweight wrestler Lisiate Anau won the Outstanding Wrestler award.

Wilkerson, Creed claim conference titles

It came down to the final event, but the Powell High School boys swim team held off hard-charging Lyman to place second in the 3A West Conference Championship in Riverton over the weekend.

The longest road trip of the basketball season proved tough for Powell High School basketball as both the boys’ and girls’ teams suffered losses to Mountain View on Friday and Lyman on Saturday.

NWC hosting NJCAA District Qualifier

On Saturday, five teams will compete in Northwest College’s Cabre Gym for the National Junior College Athletic Association Rocky Mountain District Qualifier. Wrestlers who place in the top three for their weight class will advance to the NJCAA National Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Feb. 24 and 25.
