Youth wrestlers battle hard in home tourney

Wrestlers from around the region in Wyoming and Montana flocked to Powell last month to take part in the Powell Wrestling Club’s tournament at Powell High School, wrestling in three different styles throughout the weekend.

Leading the way for the Powell wrestlers was folkstyle, where a host of young grapplers made their mark.

Winners for the Powell girls divisions included Zoey Redder in the 10U 80-pound division; Alexis Harris in the 12U 126-pound division and Eva Wilson in the 14U 163-pound division.

For the boys, Jayden Gillett won the 10U 67-pound division; Case Davis won the 12U 78-pound division; Owen Jones won the 14U 125-131 pound division; Ethan Ely won the won the 14U 149-pound division; Trevin Morton won the 14U 165-pound division and Mitchel Wainscott won the 16U 190-pound division.

The next most popular wrestling style for the tournament was freestyle, where the Powell youth had plenty of top performances.

Winners for the girls divisions were Hunter Jones, who won both the 8U 46-54 pound and 62-pound divisions, and Wilson who won the 14U 143-149 pound division 

For the boys, Ace Phillips won the 8U 56-pound division; Rowdee Goolsbey won the 10U 67-pound division; Archer Wenzel won the 10U 93-pound division; Davis won the 12U 78-pound division; Dylan Hansen won the 12U 82-pound division; Jonathan Haney won the 12U 108-pound division; Russell Goolsbey won the 14U 106-110 pound division; Owen Jones won the 14U 130-138 pound division; Ely won the 14U 149-pound division; Morton won the 14U 165-167 pound division and Channing Wenzel won the 16U 113-pound division.

In the Greco wrestling section several Powell wrestlers were winners, as Ridge Rohrer won the 8U 43-49 pound division; Phillips won the 8U 56-pound division; Jadyn Flores won the 10U 105-113 pound division; Davis capped off his strong weekend winning the 12U 78-79 pound division and Wainscott won the 16U 190-pound division.

The Big Horn Basin Wrestling Camp will be taking place starting Monday, with kids of all ages welcome from pre-K through seniors in high school.

The camp will begin on Monday and will run through Wednesday starting at 12:30 p.m. each day, with younger wrestlers ending in the afternoon and older wrestlers going as late as 7 p.m. The camp will feature wrestlers and coaches from around the area to help each level of competition.
