Wyoming GOP reacts to Trump verdict

On May 29, 2024, a New York court found Donald J. Trump guilty on 34 felony accounts. In April, delegates to the Wyoming Republican State Convention unanimously nominated Trump to be elected president of the United States. Despite the actions of the New York court which many conservatives view as pure political persecution, Wyoming Republicans stand behind Donald J. Trump and maintain unwavering support of his nomination.

These recent events clearly show why our nation was founded as a constitutional republic and not as a democracy. A republic supports rule of law and representative government for all citizens, while a true democracy relies on rule by the majority. While a republic with representative government gives voice to all its citizens, majority rule always devolves into the tyranny of the masses and silences the voices of reason and law.

The trial of President Donald J. Trump demonstrated a flagrant disregard for rule of law and precedent. It stands as an egregious example of political tyranny. No legal precedent, no standard of court function, was left unchanged in the blatant effort to convict Trump of any charge, no matter how specious. This is not the American way, nor does it honor our history of freedom and protective rights for our citizens.

The Wyoming Republican Party stands firmly as the party of law and order. We support the United States Constitution. We support any citizen’s right to be dealt with according to established standards of procedure within our legal system. The flagrant disregard for legal standards by this court puts all citizens at risk and devalues the precious and hard-won freedom of a nation founded on principles of three branch governance with checks and balances. None of us will be secure in our rights if this system falls.

The ill-conceived efforts of the Democrat Party to destroy President Donald J. Trump and overturn over 250 years of freedom in our great United States only serves to strengthen our resolve to elect conservative candidates willing to uphold the U.S. and Wyoming Constitutions and preserve freedom for generations to come.
