The Powell High School wrestlers more than held their ground Friday and Saturday in the Lander Invitational.
Coach Nate Urbach’s matmen finished second to only Star Valley with 185 team points to the Braves’ 258. The invite paired a total of 21 squads.
Tournament officials crowned Panthers Corey Linebaugh and Seth Horton as champions of their divisions.
“Seth Horton wrestled really well” and “beat a two-time state champion in the finals,” coach Urbach said, while “Corey Linebaugh had a career tournament.”
Linebaugh “came back in two matches and defeated a defending state champ in the finals,” the coach said.
Powell profited by major support from other placers and team scorers.
Colt Nicholson, the Panther at 106 pounds, finished second while Nate Balderas took fifth in the same division. At 132, the third-place medal went to Michael Maddox, who “wrestled well throughout the tournament,” the coach said.
At 220 pounds, Carson Olsen also wrestled “really well,” Urbach said. Olsen lost to the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the semis “and then battled back to be third,” the coach said.
After being bumped up to heavyweight, Dallas Oliver proceded to pull off four upsets and take fourth place for himself.
Logan Werner, who went to the mat at 113, “really had a nice tournament,” Urbach said. Werner was “not ranked going in but placed fifth in a tough field.”
The coach noted that Riley Bennett “was a match away from placing.” Bennett continues to improve, Urbach added.
“As a team we looked OK on Friday,” said the Panther coach, whose team “had some disappointments, but looked really good on Saturday.” He said the squad needs “to be more consistent down the stretch.”
The Panthers will compete in the Ron Thon Invitational this weekend at Riverton.
